Objectifying the Situation
The main question people ask after graduation is always “Well what are your plans now?” Up until a month ago, I didnt have any. I made a last minute decision to apply for grad school and somehow ended up accepting my offer of admission into my first choice school, Syracuse University to get my masters in Forensics.
When I tell people I am interested in forensics, I get one of two responses. “Oh thats so cool” or “Dude can you handle that?” Well, in response to the latter. Obviously. Somewhere along the line I realized that I have a gift of being able to look at death and illness from a detached standpoint. I am able to objectify the situation and disconnect from emotion. Not everyone can do this, so I saw it as my “talent” so to speak. Might as well utilize it. Dealing with death emotionally constantly will leave a person mentally fucked up.
On another, yet somewhat relevant topic.. it slightly annoys me when someone gets out of surgery and their family is praising and thanking god. How about you thank the surgeon who has went through years of school and is on call 24 hours a day, every day of his life. Because Im pretty sure he is responsible for saving your loved ones life. Regardless..
As I sit here, in the surgery waiting room of the hospital, hearing that my grandmother has been diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, I cant help but reflect on each of these points, and hope that the surgeon studied hard during his years in med school. After all, her life is in his hands.
